Employment and Internships

Project Exploration Background: Co-founded by paleontologist Paul Sereno and educator Gabrielle Lyon, Project Exploration is a nonprofit science education organization that makes science accessible to the public–especially minority youth and girls–through personalized experiences with scientists and science. Through youth development programs, school services, exhibits, and online initiatives, Project Exploration involves the public in the excitement of scientific discovery.


  • IT Internship

Position Summary:
As a member of the Operations and Administration Department, the IT Intern is responsible for all aspects of the IT infrastructure for the organization including software, hardware, and equipment.

Responsibilities
Help Desk Support

  • Perform routine maintenance on desktop and laptop computers, printers, and peripheral devices.
  • Troubleshoot software, hardware, and network connectivity issues.
  • Manage peripheral equipment for staff—digital cameras, drives, etc.
  • Provide assistance to staff in proper use of software and hardware. 

IT Infrastructure Management

  • Coordinate network user accounts, shares, and directory structure.
  • Perform software and hardware installations.
  • Ensure and facilitate data back-ups.
  • Troubleshoot network and server-related issues. Research and implement solutions. Independently, actively participate in solving IT-related issues.
  • Work closely with department directors to complete projects, installations, and initiatives 
  • Write and update documentation for system maintenance and operating policies and procedures.

Other Responsibilities

  • Provide staff support and logistical assistance at organizational-wide events.
  • Attend bi-weekly staff meetings, attend occasional department staff meetings to access IT needs.
  • Perform other support or administrative duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Enrolled in computer science or information technology related degree  from an accredited college or university or equivalent combination of work experience and education.
  • MSCE certifications—recently completed or current candidate.
  • Experience with the installation, configuration, and maintenance of Microsoft Windows XP desktop and laptop clients in a networked environment. 
  • Work with  hard disk-based back up systems. Acronis back-up management experience a plus.
  • Experience in the installation, configuration and maintenance of small to medium sized (25-50 user) LANs. 
  • VPN/RDP deployment and management.
  • Experience with Windows 2000/2003 AD server environments, MSExchange management and configuration, MS SQL Server database configuration.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software.
  • Basic understanding of database construction and functionality. Filemaker Pro experience a plus.
  • Proficiency with spreadsheet manipulation and formula development.
  • Excellent attention to detail, excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage time and work independently.

Salary:
$8.00/hour, 10-15 hours per week. Schedule is flexible during normal business hours (M-F 8:30-5:00). Occasional off-hours and weekend maintenance may be required.

Position dates:
Begins December 2009, ends August 2010.
